The sustainable management of water is a critical issue for all governments and communities. Water Futures is our planned response to this rapidly changing and complex issue. Our efforts are focused on avoiding water use through conservation measures and re-using water and looking for alternative sources including the capture and re-use of treated wastewater, rainwater, stormwater and grey water resources within the council area.
We have a lead role in the Water Proofing the South initiative, which seeks to maximise wastewater and stormwater reuse through a number of major projects. We will receive $14.9 million towards Waterproofing the South Stage 2 from a new round of federal funding for South Australian stormwater harvesting projects. This will allow us to establish a citywide aquifer storage and recovery scheme which will store around three gigalitres (three billion litres) of stormwater for re-use. It's fantastic news and will allow us to build on the great outcomes of WPS Stage 1 which will deliver 3.8 gigalitres of water re-use for our communities.
