Managing waste

We are committed to reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfill from both domestic households and council operations. Households have a three bin waste and recycling system. Waste is picked up weekly, recycling fortnightly and green waste four weekly (monthly).

A good way to reduce the amount of waste you send to landfill is by using your recycling bin correctly. Take a look at our Waste and recycling services brochure for information on our waste services and systems. Another great way to reduce waste and keep organic matter out of landfill is by composting or worm farming your garden waste and food scraps. Why let your organic waste leave your property when you can reap the benefit of increased fertility for your garden? We sell compost bins and worm farms to residents at a subsidised rate. The council also offers residents free composting and worm farming workshops annually. Download a compost bin or worm farm order form now and get started on reusing your scraps. Payment is accepted at any council office. The bin will be delivered to your home.

Recycling is also an important feature of the daily operations of the council. Construction materials including concrete, bitumen and soil left over from council projects are either re-used or recycled with over 11,200 tonnes per year diverted from landfill. Tree prunings and green waste generated through caring for street trees and plantings does not go to waste either, with 100 per cent of the waste chipped to produce mulch which is then returned to our parks and reserves.
