Ebooks

Ebooks in librariesWhat is an ebook?
An ebook is an electronic book in digital form which can be downloaded onto your computer or an electronic device and then read like a book. Typically, ebooks are downloaded onto a device called an e-reader which are lightweight, portable and capable of storing many ‘books’ at one time. The names of devices you may already be familiar with include iPad, Kobo, Kindle, Nook and Sony readers. E-readers are ideal for travelling or commuting, or for those times when you’re just not sure what you feel like reading.

Are books a thing of the past?
Absolutely not! We will continue to purchase the same number of items as we do now, but we will also add access to e-books. This means you will have the best of both worlds.

When will ebooks be available for download from the library?
At the moment, we are still in the early stages of bringing ebooks into our collection. We are currently looking at the best way to roll out this great new feature in our collection, so keep an eye out on our website and in the library newsletter for updates on our progress.

Purchase Considerations:
Wikepedia provides an up to date comparison of e-readers and formats. Most ebooks are subject to copyright restrictions by publishers called Digital Rights Management (DRM) that control compatibility between formats and devices and protect content. Viruses can be transmitted to a device if a reputable source for the ebook is not utilized.
