The Southern Adelaide South Australia Works (Working Regions) labour market program is managed by the City of Onkaparinga on behalf of the adjoining Cities of Holdfast Bay, Marion and Mitcham - to develop and deliver multiple local projects with the principle objective to contribute to an increase in workforce participation for all those who face barriers gaining employment.
The Southern Adelaide South Australia Works Network is one of 17 South Australian regions (13 rural and 4 metropolitan) funded through the state government Department of Further Education, Employment, Science and Technology (DFEEST).
Working Regions relates to the employment targets in South Australia’s Strategic Plan, the workforce participation objectives of the state Economic Development Board, the Skills for All priorities of the state Training and Skills Commission, the social objectives of the Social Inclusion Board and regionally aligns projects to targeted growth sectors and major projects identified by the Southern Adelaide Economic Development Board and local councils.
It is a local community-initiated program aimed at providing local people with the education and training, personal support and up-skill opportunities required for them to gain employment (for unemployed), remain in the employment longer (for retrenched or retired workers) or progress to sustainable employment (for underemployed). It provides an alternative set of entry points into employment, vocational training and job search, thereby contributing to the objective of increasing the region's workforce participation rate.
Target groups for the program are unemployed and underemployed people that fall within the key disadvantaged categories such as youth (17–25 years), mature age (50+), Aboriginal people, retrenched workers, parents returning to work, people with a disability, juvenile justice clients, refugees and migrants (and their families).
Targeted outcomes for the program are employment, further education, return to school, gaining qualifications, and volunteering.
Working Regions also resources regional partnerships of the many state and federal employment and training programs, where local projects are delivered through two linked regional elements Targeted Projects (delivering employment and training initiatives) and Career Development Service (which includes a Skills Recognition Service).
