‘Maintaining a safe public health environment in which to live’

Environmental health is defined as those aspects of human health determined by physical, chemical, biological and social factors in the environment in which people live.

The environmental health team conducts routine inspections of food premises, public swimming pools and body piercing and tattoo salons. They are involved in the investigation of food poisoning and communicable disease outbreaks and assess and approve waste control systems in non-sewered areas. The team investigates various health related complaints, such as insanitary conditions, vermin infestations and pollution. Food related complaints are also investigated, for example, unclean premises, poor food handling and the presence of foreign matter in food.

Immunisation clinics are available to the community on a weekly basis, providing vaccinations as per the National Health and Medical Research Council (MHMRC) recommended schedule. The team also provides immunisation services to schools, kindergartens and work places.
