Chronic conditions risk factors and disability

Data released by the South Australian Department of Health for 2009-10 financial year indicates that the main chronic conditions for residents of Onkaparinga (18 years and over) are:

  • Arthritis (20.1% of the sample group, down from 20.7% in 2008-09)
  • Mental health conditions (15.5% down from 16.0% in 2008-09)
  • Asthma (12.3%, up from 11.8% in 2008-09)

The main risk factors are:

  • Insufficient intake of vegetables (87.1% of the sample group, down from 88.4%)
  • Insufficient intake of fruit (56.5%, up from 54.5% in 2008-09)
  • Insufficient exercise (48.4%, up from 47.4% in 2008-09)

There were also high risks from:

  • Overweight and obesity
  • Short-term effects of alcohol

Disability

The 2006 Census revealed that there were 6,628 people in the City of Onkaparinga who needed help with at least one of the core activities of daily living.  This defines them as disabled, through suffering from a long-term health condition or old age.

The City of Onkaparinga has a considerably higher percentage of disabled people in the 5-14, 15-19, 45-54 and 55-64 age groups compared to the Adelaide Statistical Division.  The percentage of disabled in the 75-84 age group is substantially lower (4.6%), as shown in the table and graph below.

Disabled Persons by Statistical Local Areas

The last Census conducted in 2006 showed that the North Coast Statistical Local Area (SLA) had the highest percentage of disabled residents in 2006 (7.3%), followed by Morphett SLA (5.4%) and Hackham SLA (5.2%), as shown in the table and graph below.
