Businesses

In June 2007 there were 9,696 businesses in the City of Onkaparinga.  This represented 6.7% of the total businesses in South Australia (14,422). 

It is important to note that there have been some changes to the 2006-07 Australian Bureau of Statistics publication, which makes it incomparable to past publications.  On 1 July 2007, there was a change in the GST threshold to $75,000 per annum for businesses (previously $50,000 per annum) and $150,000 per annum for not for profit institutions (previously $100,000 per annum).

Employment

In June 2007 there were 3,111 businesses that had employees or 32.1%.  There were 6,585 or 67.9% of total enterprises that did not have employees.  Of the employing businesses, 90.7% had fewer than 20 employees.

During 2007 the most numerous businesses in Onkaparinga were:

  • Construction, with a total of 2,343 businesses of which 1,779 (75.9%) were non-employing and 564 (24.1%) had employees
  • Property and Business Services, with a total of 1,836 businesses of which 1,281 (69.8%) were non-employing and 555 (30.2%) had employees.

Turnover

The majority (42.7%) of businesses in the city had turnovers of less than $75,000 per annum in June 2007.  The main types of businesses making between $2 million and $10 million were Retail Trade (48 businesses), Construction (42 businesses) and Manufacturing (39 businesses). 

Of the businesses that have a turnover range over $10 million, manufacturing was the most represented, succeeded by the retail trade industry.  The table below show the main categories of business and their annual turnover ranges.
