2019 Santos Tour Down Under

Be Safe Be Seen MAC Stage 6

The City of Onkaparinga once again held a stage of the Santos Tour Down Under but for the first time ever, Willunga Hill was the scene for the final stage of the event. Before the race start in McLaren Vale, Australian rider Richie Porte (BMC racing team) was presented the Key to the City by Mayor Erin Thompson in recognition of winning the Willunga Hill stage an unprecedented five consecutive times.

The day itself was fantastic with perfect weather and crowds lining the entire route; setting up celebrations in the front yards, enjoying the race from road side position or at one of the many community events scattered around at Aldinga, McLaren Vale or Willunga.

The race to the finish was fierce with Richie Porte once again winning the queen stage and remaining the only winner of the iconic hill climb. What’s more, Daryl Impey walked away with the Ochre Jersey making him the first rider in the men’s race history to walk away with the back-to-back title.

It was a big day for the City of Onkaparinga and we’d like to thank the community for their support and the business and tourism associations for all their efforts in supporting this event with their own activities showcasing our wonderful region.
