Shimmer Photographic Biennale is the only South Australian arts festival dedicated to celebrating the art of photography and the culture of the camera.  Over the past decade the City of Onkaparinga has hosted this biennial festival throughout the McLaren Vale wine region, adding to the areas well established reputation as a premium destination for the arts, food and wine. The Shimmer Photographic Biennale 2018 (SPB2018) will be held from 14 September to 14 October.

Calling for expressions of interest

The City of Onkaparinga welcomes exhibition applications from emerging, mid-career or established photographers, as individuals or groups, working in any photographic genre or across any photographic process, to present bodies of work for consideration to be included in the SPB2018 program (with the exclusion of moving image). Applicants may also indicate interest in holding connected or stand-alone workshops or associated photographic events.

SPB2018 exhibitions will be promoted throughout the City of Onkaparinga and will be included in the full colour Shimmer catalogue, promoted across the City of Onkaparinga webpages and through associated print and social media platforms.

How to apply:

Applicants are required to complete the SPB2018 online application indicating interest in exhibiting, holding workshops or running associated events. Terms and conditions


Each application will consist of a completed and signed application form and supporting images. Entries must be submitted via email only. Late entries will not be accepted.

Completed application form must include:

  1. Artist/s contact, webpage and social media details. (for group exhibition list one contact for main representative).
  2. Artist statement (150 words max). The artist’s statement should articulate the artistic and conceptual intent of proposed exhibition.
  3. List of works. (Include artist’s name, title, date, medium, dimensions).
  4. Abridged CV (1 page).
  5. Supporting material (Solo : 4 images |  Group :12 images)

Each submitted image must be:

  • JPEG format only
  • hi-resolution no less than 300 dpi
  • file size no larger than 5MB

Images must be original works by listed applicants and should be indicative of work to be exhibited in the SPB2018.

Applications submitted for consideration will undertake a selection process facilitated by the Shimmer Photographic Biennale Reference Panel (SPBRP). The SPBRP will be looking for applications that represent cohesive exhibitions demonstrating

  • coherence of submitted images
  • professional presentation
  • clarity of intent
  • originality

The SPBRP will be responsible for selecting, curating and locating the successful applicants with festival venues. The selected exhibitions will be featured in conjunction with a curated core program. Selection by the reference panel will be deemed final and no further correspondence will be entered into.


  • Expressions of interest open 10 November, 2017.
  • Close midnight Sunday 4 February, 2018.
  • Successful participants will be advised early March, 2018.


After the SPBRP has matched Artists with venues, the Coordinator of SPB2018 will facilitate the introductory process connecting curated exhibitions to associated venues.  Artists are requested to adhere to venues contract protocol and all exhibition arrangements will be made exclusively with host venue.

Though Shimmer advocates that exhibition fees are waived for the duration of festival this arrangement will be made at the discretion of the host venue. All exhibited works should be available for sale throughout the duration of the festival. The percentage of commission will be nominated by the host venue.


No payment is required to register your interest with the Shimmer Photographic Biennale.

Please note

  • Priority will be given to work not previously exhibited in South Australia.
  • Work submitted must be available for exhibition from 14 September – 14 October 2018.
  • Incomplete submissions will not be accepted or reviewed.
  • Hard copy submissions will not be accepted.
  • Support material will not be returned.
  • Applicants may apply as individuals or groups.   
  • Eligible artists must be 18 years or over at time of entry.
  • There is no limit to the number of entries submitted by eligible artists.
  • Personal information supplied in application will be used only for administration purposes and will not be supplied to a third party.
