In 1854 James Bassett built a schoolroom near his house (which still stands further east) and opened it as a Boys' School. The building was used as a schoolroom until 1874, and was later used as the District Council Chambers. The building is a simple gabled structure built of roughly squared freestone, with a slate roof.
