Council has a strong and active commitment to heritage conservation. It has developed a set of initiatives to conserve and promote both publicly and privately owned heritage places. These include:

• Heritage Advisory Service which can be accessed by owners of heritage properties within the City of Onkaparinga;
• Local Heritage Fund for conservation work to local heritage buildings;
• Local heritage inventories developed by the three former Councils;
• Heritage Conservation Plans for Council owned buildings;
• The Addition of approximately 300 local heritage places being added to the development plan.

Heritage Advisory Service

With funding assistance from Heritage SA, Council provides free expert architectural advice for property owners of state and local heritage items within the City of Onkaparinga. The advice provided will generally relate to:

• how to maintain and conserve heritage buildings;
• how to redevelop/create additions to heritage buildings;
• possible funding sources;
• assistance with development applications.

Local Heritage Fund.

The Local Heritage Fund offers the owners of local heritage properties a subsidy for work associated with the conservation of their building(s). The subsidy is available for owners of current local heritage listed places and provides for 30% of the value of the conservation work, with a maximum subsidy value of $3000.

Heritage Conservation Plans

Conservation plans establish the heritage values of a place, as well as identify conservation policies and maintenance mechanisms appropriate in maintaining those heritage values. Conservation plans generally comprise the following:

• history of the place;
• an architectural assessment;
• analysis of the physical condition of the place;
• statement of the heritage values of the place;
• constraints on conservation, including user and/or owner requirements;
• conservation policies for the place and the site;
• measured drawings.
